Chapter 8
After almost everyone had gone home that evening, I knocked on the captainâs door. She immediately called for me to come in.
She smiled when she saw it was me. âHow are you holding up?â she asked.
I sighed and admitted, âItâs been a damned long day.â
âYouâre going to find those girls, Ford,â she assured me. âThereâs not a doubt in my mind.â
âThanks, Capân.â
âSo,â she went on. âAre you going to fill me in on this weird leave of absence youâve been on?â
âI think itâs a little too weird to try and explain properly,â I replied, taking a chair in front of her desk. âIâve just been having some problems.â
A look of concern passed over her pretty face. She was fifteen years older than me â but she was a damn fine woman. She had long ass legs that went to the Milky Way, and a taut booty that always made you fantasize about biting into it.
Up until a few weeks ago, sheâd been my biggest crush. Her silent worry on my behalf brought a faint smile to my lips.
âNothing serious,â I lied. âBut there is one thing I wanted to discuss with you.â
âFire away.â
âIâm having some money issues,â I confessed. âWould it be possible to get a little bit of an advance? I lost my old apartment, and I need to put down a deposit on a new one.â
âAnything you need,â she replied without hesitation. âAnd donât think of it as an advance. We have a fund for situations like this. We take care of our own, Ford.â
âThanks, Capân,â I said sincerely. âThanks a lot.â
âYouâre my best detective,â she told me. âI canât have you sleeping in the streets.â
This statement deeply moved me. She had never said anything like that to me before. Sheâd commended my work, of course â but sheâd never gone that far.
âThank you,â I repeated. âThat really means a lot to me.â
âWhere are you staying?â she inquired.
âKnightsbridge Motel.â
âWhy donât you come stay with me for a few days?â she suggested. âI have plenty of space.â
My mouth nearly dropped open. Did Donna Briggs just ask me to be her roomie?
âIâd jump on that offer,â I admitted, âbut I have a dog.â
âYou have a dog?â she echoed in amazement. âDani Ford â the badass cop who doesnât care about anybody? Has a dog?â
I knew she didnât mean it like that â but her comment stung. Iâd been thinking about Risa all day; thinking about how Iâd fucked her over and abandoned her. When sheâd given everything for me.
My eyes welled up with tears, and I turned my face away.
âHey,â Donna said gently, leaning forward in her chair. âIâm sorry, Ford. I can see youâre going through some real shit â and I just want to help. Come on. Letâs go get your dog.â
âAre you serious?â I asked in amazement. âIâve only had him for like two days. I donât even know if heâs house-trained.â
âWell,â she said with a wry grin, âas long as you clean up after the damned thing â I donât see a problem.
