Chapter 8

After almost everyone had gone home that evening, I knocked on the captain’s door. She immediately called for me to come in.

She smiled when she saw it was me. “How are you holding up?” she asked.

I sighed and admitted, “It’s been a damned long day.”

“You’re going to find those girls, Ford,” she assured me. “There’s not a doubt in my mind.”

“Thanks, Cap’n.”

“So,” she went on. “Are you going to fill me in on this weird leave of absence you’ve been on?”

“I think it’s a little too weird to try and explain properly,” I replied, taking a chair in front of her desk. “I’ve just been having some problems.”

A look of concern passed over her pretty face. She was fifteen years older than me – but she was a damn fine woman. She had long ass legs that went to the Milky Way, and a taut booty that always made you fantasize about biting into it.

Up until a few weeks ago, she’d been my biggest crush. Her silent worry on my behalf brought a faint smile to my lips.

“Nothing serious,” I lied. “But there is one thing I wanted to discuss with you.”

“Fire away.”

“I’m having some money issues,” I confessed. “Would it be possible to get a little bit of an advance? I lost my old apartment, and I need to put down a deposit on a new one.”

“Anything you need,” she replied without hesitation. “And don’t think of it as an advance. We have a fund for situations like this. We take care of our own, Ford.”

“Thanks, Cap’n,” I said sincerely. “Thanks a lot.”

“You’re my best detective,” she told me. “I can’t have you sleeping in the streets.”

This statement deeply moved me. She had never said anything like that to me before. She’d commended my work, of course – but she’d never gone that far.

“Thank you,” I repeated. “That really means a lot to me.”

“Where are you staying?” she inquired.

“Knightsbridge Motel.”

“Why don’t you come stay with me for a few days?” she suggested. “I have plenty of space.”

My mouth nearly dropped open. Did Donna Briggs just ask me to be her roomie?

“I’d jump on that offer,” I admitted, “but I have a dog.”

“You have a dog?” she echoed in amazement. “Dani Ford – the badass cop who doesn’t care about anybody? Has a dog?”

I knew she didn’t mean it like that – but her comment stung. I’d been thinking about Risa all day; thinking about how I’d fucked her over and abandoned her. When she’d given everything for me.

My eyes welled up with tears, and I turned my face away.

“Hey,” Donna said gently, leaning forward in her chair. “I’m sorry, Ford. I can see you’re going through some real shit – and I just want to help. Come on. Let’s go get your dog.”

“Are you serious?” I asked in amazement. “I’ve only had him for like two days. I don’t even know if he’s house-trained.”

“Well,” she said with a wry grin, “as long as you clean up after the damned thing – I don’t see a problem.
